PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds Will Allow RSR Rewards for Players

PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds, usually referred to as PUBG by fans is one of the top first-person shooters. It was nominated to be game of the year in 2018 and still has a massive fanbase. The game is available on nearly every platform including mobile versions.

In a massive sign of blockchain adoption, PUBG has partnered with a somewhat obscure cryptocurrency called Refereum (Ticker: RSR). They have announced their partnership in a press release earlier today. This partnership will let players win on-chain rewards for completing tasks, such as winning 1st place in a round.  It will also reward popular streams of PUBG with RSR tokens. Refereum's PUBG campaign will run until August 20.

"Gamers do so much free marketing for games through streaming services and social media, but they're rarely compensated sufficiently for it," says Refereum CEO Dylan Jones. "This is the problem Refereum aims to fix — and now, with this revolutionary new way of rewarding gamers for their in-game engagement with PUBG, we not only reward them for playing a game that they love, but for their dedication in becoming better players, too."

Refereum started as an ICO in 2018 and managed to raise a whopping $40 M equivalent in Ethereum. It is an ERC-20 token based on Ethereum's blockchain. Since their ICO the token steadily lost its value like many other ICOs of its era. News of this partnership may however, boost RSR's value in the short-term. Should Refereum announce further partnerships with leading game companies, it could generate actual value for the token.

The Bottom Line

PUBG & Refereum's partnership is yet another sign of institutional adoption of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. It shows that the gaming industry is warming up to blockchain adoption. PUBG is joining the likes of "big tech" which is adopting the tech. This includes Googles partnership with Chainlink, and Facebook which is launching its own cryptocurrency, Libra.

All things considered this is great news for the crypto-space.
